Put Your Networking Card in the Employer Shuffle

by Melissa Small

Business cards are an important and valuable tool in building a business and growing your brand. As a job seeker, your personal brand is your business, so you should help your brand get recognized by developing your job seekers card. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Your card should be easy to read.  Keep it clean and professional by choosing a 10-11 point sans-serif font. Make sure your name and basic contact information (e.g. phone number, email, webpage or link to your online portfolio, LinkedIn profile) are clearly visible.
  • Find a tagline. Rather than listing a job title on your card, consider highlighting your employment focus, interest or skills on your card.  To come up with your personal tagline, search through your resume or letters of reference and find key words or phrases that best describe you and what type of work you can do.
  • Add a graphic. To help your card stand out, consider using an image or colour scheme that represents something important to you and is consistent with your brand. Remember to choose an image or graphic that prints clearly and can be read on a business card.
  • Keep it simple. Including too many words or graphics can be overwhelming. Feel free to use both sides of the card if needed, or you can leave the back open so that there is room for people to make some notes about either where they met you or what they remember.

Your networking card doesn’t replace the importance of a targeted resume when you are applying for work. It is an additional marketing tool. Keep copies of your networking card with you at all times because you never know who you will run into when you are looking for work or even just running an errand. Giving your card to someone might help you get introduced to your next potential hiring manager or business contact.
