4 Tips on How to Attract Attention to your LinkedIn Profile

Since Linked In began over 10 years ago, its membership has grown from 10 to 277,000,000(1). That’s an enormous number of people that only continues to increase. In fact, as of the end of first quarter of 2015, LinkedIn membership was sitting at 364,000,000!(2) If you are one of the 364,000,000 members using LinkedIn as a networking and job search tool, how can you attract people and help them to zero in on your profile?

Here are 4 tips to help them find you:

Be clear about the specific area or region you are willing to work. Keywords count and recruiters may use a city or town name to narrow down their search of LinkedIn profiles. If you live in Cambridge, but know that your job market is in Toronto, list Toronto, Greater Toronto Area (GTA) or even a postal code as areas you are willing to work or relocate. You can share this information toward the bottom of your LinkedIn Summary. Also, take time to update your LinkedIn profile and make sure that you are happy with the details you have included because your profile is speaking for you even when you are not there.

Broaden your reach. As a hardworking and eager job seeker, you will want to make sure you are reaching and connecting with people who may be able to help you with your job search. You can maximize the opportunities for others to find you on LinkedIn by linking your profile to other sources, such as your Facebook account, your personal Twitter account, email signature, your blog or website, business card, cover letter and resume. To do this you will want to create a custom URL (your own web address) for your LinkedIn profile, which can be set -up by visiting the settings section of your profile.

Associate LinkedIn Company pages with your profile. If you’ve ever noticed, many of your connections will have their past and present employers’ logo appearing next to their job titles within the Experience section. Many companies are setting up Company Pages on LinkedIn. In order to associate your profile with your past or present employers, be certain you are using the exact company name. When you begin entering a company name into LinkedIn, the system is smart enough to try to find the best matches. Check to make sure the company that appears is the correct one and then click on it. You will then see the company logo appear on your profile. By ensuring your profile is associated with specific companies, your profile will appear when people are browsing the actual Company Page.

Publish a Post. LinkedIn now allows its users to publish posts about any topic. Think of it as blogging, but directly on LinkedIn. If you have something interesting to say or share about your area of work, then go for it! The beauty of publishing posts on LinkedIn is that you do not have to maintain your own blog. All of your posts will be stored on your LinkedIn profile, shared with your existing connections, as well as those interested in the topic you choose to write about. As an author of a post, you can indicate three keywords the article is about, and the post will become searchable on the LinkedIn network. Once you post an article it will also appear in the Pulse section of LinkedIn’s newsfeed and will appear in the newsfeed of those who indicate their interest in the topics you may have written about. Your posts can also be shared across your social media, as mentioned above.
