What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Facebook? Friends? Family? Memes? Facebook can be a great way to keep in touch but it can also be an effective way to find employment. Here are five tips for using Facebook that could improve your chances of getting hired.
1. Follow Organizations That Interest You
Following or subscribing to the pages of organizations you would like to work for is a great way to stay on top of their latest news. During an interview, mention some of their recent projects or activities that you have seen on Facebook. This shows that you are knowledgeable of their workplace and culture and demonstrates that you have taken the time to research prior to the interview.
2. Check Reviews
Would you rather work for a company that people love or a company that people hate? Check out company reviews on Facebook as they often reveal valuable insights about the organization’s culture and how they interact with their customers.
3. Join Job Search Groups
There are a number of Facebook groups out there that focus on sharing job opportunities. If you search the city you live in + Jobs (e.g. Toronto Jobs), you will find a list of groups created to help people to find employment. 4. Check out Facebook’s new “Job Postings” feature
Facebook has recently developed a way for small businesses to advertise jobs on their Facebook Business pages, allowing people to apply using their own Facebook profiles. While this feature is still being rolled out, you can expect to see more employers advertising jobs through Facebook in the near future.
5. Stay Private
Keep your professional life and personal life separate. During your job search, make sure that your privacy settings are set to Friends Only. Make sure your profile photo is one that you would be okay with your future employer seeing and delete anything that could be viewed as inappropriate.
