Lutherwood is a progressive, not-for-profit health and social service organization that strengthens people's lives in our community regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual identity by providing mental health, employment and housing services to more than 19,600 people annually in Waterloo Region and Wellington County.
Our programs continue to expand with culturally-aware counsellors and staff. We are training every member of our staff to work through an anti-racism lens, and we continue to educate ourselves to meet the needs of our community.
Serving our Community
For over five decades, children, youth and their families have trusted Lutherwood's Children's Mental Health Services to support them as they cope with serious emotional and behavioural challenges. We provide preventative and supportive services in both in-house and community-based settings, and use innovative and proven practices help families cope with life’s challenges and the systemic barriers that impact BIPOC and LGBTQ+ community members. Our children's mental health services include day and live-in treatment as well as community and school-based support.
In the summer of 2014, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services selected Lutherwood as the Lead Agency for children's mental health services in Waterloo Region. Responsible for the planning of, access to and quality of children’s mental health services across Waterloo Region, Lutherwood established an innovative and collaborative approach that is regarded as a model for other lead agencies. This approach is continuously expanding to ensure we address the ways in which discrimination negatively impacts BIPOC and LGBTQ+ community members disproportionately.
Lutherwood is a leader in Employment Services. We offer a broad range of programs that help individuals find and maintain jobs, newcomers adjust to the Canadian workplace, and employers recruit and train employees. We also provide customized outplacement and adjustment services to help both employers and workers manage the difficult process of workplace downsizing.
Lutherwood has been helping individuals find and maintain permanent, safe and affordable housing since it launched a Housing Registry in 1989 and opened Housing Help Centres in Kitchener and Cambridge in 2001. Today, our Housing Services has expanded and includes assistance with loans towards rental arrears and deposits, service resolution support, public education, training and information on housing. We also operate the Safe Haven youth shelter for 12-18 year olds.
The Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation raises funds for Lutherwood’s not-for-profit community work. We work with our donors to direct their donations to support the program of their choice or to the area of greatest need. Donations help us operate a shelter for youth living on the street, reach children mentally shut off from the world, help young parents cope with newborns, purchase food for hungry youth, help youth re-integrate with their community and give children a Christmas who would otherwise do without.
As an extension of its work, Lutherwood provides services to seniors at Luther Village on the Park in Waterloo. This retirement community is for adults 55 years and older who desire an active lifestyle where they can maintain their independence as long as possible knowing that extra help with daily living activities is available as needed. Our residents appreciate knowing that they are paying market value for their accommodation, but instead of paying shareholders, the surplus generated in this beautiful community supports Lutherwood’s great community work.
Our staff listen to your concerns, understand your challenges, answer your questions and respond to your needs. Drawing on the expertise of multidisciplinary teams, we work with you to build on your strengths and develop strategies that help you overcome your challenges and achieve your goals.
In addition, we are committed to learning more how BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities are disproportionately impacted by discrimination and are fostering relationships to bridge this gap of inequity.
For more than 50 years, Lutherwood has earned its reputation for improving the quality of life of people in our community; people just like you and your family.
