Employment Program For At-Risk Youth

By Kyla Frankowski, Employment Advisor

Providing Mentorship To Student

The ability to earn money while learning workplace skills can be a great motivator for youth. The Youth Job Connection program, now offered at all three of Lutherwood’s employment service locations, provides that and more!

The Youth Job Connection (YJC) program was recently launched by the Ontario government as a continued commitment to their Youth Job Strategy.  As a service provider in the Employment Ontario network, Lutherwood was chosen to deliver the program to youth aged 15 to 29 who experience multiple barriers to employment such as poverty, homelessness and mental health issues. Youth Job Connection goes beyond traditional job search and placement programs to provide these youth with more intensive supports, such as:

  • Paid pre-employment training to promote job-readiness
  • Job matching and paid job placements, with placement supports for participants and hiring incentives for employers
  • Mentorship opportunities; and
  • Education and work transition supports

With these supports, youth will be able to successfully transition into meaningful employment and succeed in the labour market. They will also gain valuable skills such as time management and develop a better understanding of employer expectations.

To date, Lutherwood has supported 69 local youth in preparing for work through meaningful and engaging pre-employment training. As these youth move into the next stage of the program, we look forward to observing the impact of the program’s job development and paid job placements supports.

"I really am enjoying my new job, the atmosphere there is great and they all welcomed me when I first started. Without your help I would never ever have had such a wonderful opportunity." - Sabrina, Former Client
