A Passion for Helping Kids

Randy Penney

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. - Winston Churchill

Throughout his life, Randy Penney has shared kindness and care with others. He has been a priest, a social worker and a foster parent of ten boys. Focused on helping others, Randy regularly encounters young people in the community whose lives he has impacted in a positive way. One special way Randy has coached and mentored youth is by sharing his interest and skills in photography. He shines when he describes how photography brought meaning and joy to many young lives.

For his entire 21 year career at Lutherwood, Randy was a generous donor. He gave in so many ways; a true role model of giving time, treasure and talent.  He gave very generous regular donations through our staff giving program. Every year he increased his contributions. He shared his talent with photography by donating amazing framed prints for silent auctions and events. And he volunteered at every event we held, enjoying his conversations with other donors and Lutherwood friends.

You might ask – why, when someone works at an organization do they also give so much outside of their work role?  Randy believes passionately about the work Lutherwood does with kids and he wants to make sure we have the resources to do the hard work. Being a donor deepened his connection to the work and he gained satisfaction knowing that underfunded programs could continue to exist because of him.

This summer, Randy decided that it was time to retire from his role as Director of Lead Agency at Lutherwood. But he has kept his connection to us and will continue to do so. The kids that Lutherwood helps are in his heart and his future giving plans. Randy has chosen to include them in his will so his legacy will live on as he helps future generations of kids who need our help.

Randy’s career is not over.  You can now find him working at Murphy’s Law, a moonshine distillery in Elmira, where he coaches and mentors the young staff he works with. His caring, generous heart has no limits.
