School-Based Counselling

Personal and interpersonal problems can negatively impact the success of students in school programs. Lutherwood offers school-based counselling in some public schools in Waterloo Region to help students put problems into perspective and begin to see themselves as resourceful and resilient.

Our Program

The program is run in partnership with Waterloo Region District School Board and enables our counsellors to work in the schools directly with a student requesting support. Together we develop a practical and realistic plan that builds on each student’s strengths, achieves their goals and instills hope for a positive future. Each plan is tailored to fit the student’s situation, resources and strengths.

This confidential service is available in some schools in Waterloo Region and is provided during school hours.

Goals

Student goals form a key part of the support plan and include emotion management, relationship development, communication and/or conflict resolution skills, as well as developing more effective study habits and strategies for reducing stress and anxiety. The counsellor helps the student assess their goal attainment and make plans for continued self-care and future goal achievement before completing counselling.

Referral

Referrals are made by students themselves, teachers, school administrators, police, and/or public health nurses.

Feedback from students, parents, and school staff indicates that many youth would not otherwise attend counselling if it were not at the school and that counselling has made a difference with respect to attendance, participation and studying success.

Eligibility

Enrollment is limited to certain schools and based on individual need.

Fees

This program is funded by United Way of Cambridgeprivate donors and foundations.
