Prevention Services
Lutherwood’s Community Services Program offers a variety of prevention and support services to help individuals and families who are at risk of developing mental or emotional problems due to the challenges they are facing.
The Betty Thompson Youth Centre
The Betty Thompson Youth Centre is home to Safe Haven Shelter in downtown Kitchener – a shelter that offers children ages 12-15 a safe place to go if they are at risk of homelessness. Children arrive frightened and alone to find safety and support with people who care. Staff help the children find a safe home to return to.

Lutherwood Family Counselling
Lutherwood Family Counselling Service provides school based counselling services to some Cambridge schools to meet the increasing mental health needs of children and youth in the area. However, the need is there in other schools in Waterloo Region as well and your support can help us bring this service to other children in our community.
Community Based Services
Lutherwood staff work in the community to advise, deliver and provide resources to struggling families.
Partners and
Mobile Crisis programs are delivered in the home and are available to promote positive relationships within families when a child has a mental health challenge.
Strategies include:
- Parenting Support
- Problem Solving
- Conflict Resolution
Residential Treatment Services - Benjamin Road
Lutherwood’s
residential treatment programs provide intense services for high risk youth who are not able to live at home. Troubled children live and learn at the residences on Benjamin Road in Waterloo. Many of them are also involved with child welfare or youth justice services.
In some cases, there may be a history of familial mental illness, domestic violence and/or substance abuse. Situations have the potential to escalate and further put the youth and their families at risk either in their home or community. Donated dollars ensure that troubled youth can stay at Lutherwood to get the help they need for their mental health challenges.
Other Services
Donated dollars also ensure the following unique programs can continue:
Transitional Programming
Paves the way for the integration of the youth back to their home and community school
Music Therapy
A special way of reaching and treating troubled youth through music therapy
Therapeutic Recreation
Provides youth with a physical outlet for learning, exercise and relief of emotional stress
Spiritual Guidance
Presents an opportunity for youth to explore their faith and wrestle with questions related to the deeper meaning of their personal situations
