The Practice Firm provides a simulated work environment that helps people gain practical, hands-on work experience while receiving assistance with their job search. The program is funded by Employment Ontario.

Participant Information

- IT helpdesk
- IT network administrator

The Practice Firm simulates the business activities of a real business, modelling itself after a sponsor business to ensure a realistic experience for participants. Participants hold positions equal to those in a real business and carry the same responsibilities for the success of the business. Practice Firms communicate with other Practice Firms by mail, email, telephone and fax on a regular basis, as they would in a real business.
Participants can gain hands-on experience in the fields of: payroll, benefits administration, human resources, sales, marketing, technical support, computerized graphic design including web pages, customer service, data entry, word processing, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, and/or training new affiliates to fill their positions.
The only difference between the Practice Firm and a real firm is that all transactions are virtual, with no real money or product exchanged. Although these transactions are virtual, the success of the Practice Firm is based on the accuracy and timely manner in which the transactions are processed, therefore providing a realistic and practical experience for participants.
Participants in the Practice Firm are also supported by Lutherwood staff, working to develop and implement a comprehensive job search plan.
