Returning to the Workforce After Children Can Be a Daunting Task

As the mother of three young children, I can empathise with any parent striving to step back into the workforce after taking time off work to look after children. It can be difficult for many reasons including the challenge of finding suitable and affordable daycare, helping your children overcome that initial separation anxiety (not to mention a bit of your own) and managing a transition to daycare providers - all while you are trying to find job vacancies, research employers and perhaps upgrade your skills.

It started like any other day, my client John said goodbye to his wife and kids as he left the house for his production line job. When he arrived at work, his boss sat him down and explained that work was slow and the company was laying him off. His first thought was that his boss was joking; his second thought was that this couldn’t be happening. On the drive home, John fought back tears as he wondered how to tell his wife and children. Then he felt angry at his former boss and company. What John didn’t know was that he was experiencing a typical range of emotions that anyone can go through when coping with job loss.
